 Aluminum Storm windows

Triple track, combination (windows and screen) storm windows are designed for installation over double hung windows. They are permanently installed and can be opened any time with a screen slid into place for ventilation. Double-track combination units are also available and they cost less.

Corner joints: Quality of construction affects the strength and performance of storm windows. Corners are a good place to check construction. They should be strong and air tight. Normally overlapped corner joints are better than mitered. If you can see through the joints, they will leak air.

Sash tracks and weather stripping: Storm windows are supposed to reduce air leakage around windows. The depth of the metal grooves (sash tracks) at the sides of the window and the weather stripping quality makes a big difference in how well storm windows can do this. Compare several types before deciding.

The main disadvantage of windows made from aluminum is that aluminum conducts heat very well, making it a poor insulator, as it conducts heat right out of the house. This problem can be largely remedied by using clad windows. This means that exterior aluminum storm windows are on the outside, while a wood or vinyl counterpart is on the inside. This increases the insulative abilities of the window, allowing you to take advantage of the strength of the aluminum and still save some money on your energy bill.

Vinyl windows are inexpensive, durable, and relatively energy efficient. They often look chunkier than wood or metal windows because vinyl isn't strong enough to be made into ultra-thin parts. The other problem is that the texture is unmistakably plastic. On the other hand, except for washing the glass, vinyl windows are...more
